I need a haircut, what is the name of your hairdresser again? Jennifer texted to Gwen.

Seconds later, Gwen replied with Marco and the phone number for the salon. A minute later she followed with, I have an appointment this Thursday at 9 a.m. do you want me to see if he can take you at 9:30?

Please, I’ll buy the lattes, responded Jennifer.

Ten minutes later Gwen confirmed the appointment. Jennifer had been going to the same hairdresser in Toronto for years and was ready for a change. At the corporate funeral home with regular hours, she had time to fuss over her looks. She was quickly learning that it might be time for a shorter, easier to care for cut. Most of her days were at least ten hours long.

The next few days were busy, she had a few more calls. One funeral service had been held in the chapel, the other at a church. When she had gone to pick up the coach at Williams Funeral Home for the church funeral, the owner, Dimitri asked if she could assist in the event they had more than two calls: he was going to be away for a week and the new director he hired recently was still finding his way around.

Dimitri looked haggard and distracted. Jennifer was happy to help. He and Uncle Bill had been good friends and covered for each other for vacations and days off. Dimitri introduced her to the new director, Drew, a recent graduate. She reassured him that she would be happy to assist, and to call at any time. The obvious relief on Drew’s face was thanks enough.

Jennifer had started wearing her blue suit and rather liked it. She was excited when she woke Thursday morning, having spent the previous evening pouring over hairstyles online. She texted Gwen around 7:30 a.m. to tell her she would take her out for a latte before they got their cuts. Gwen usually didn’t eat breakfast coming off her shifts, she preferred something light.

Half an hour later they were tucked into a booth at Tim’s chattering about work. Gwen mentioned that things had been going well. The dealer she thought might have been under suspicion was still working and the job wasn’t quite as stressful, the new pit boss adhered to policy.

“How are the kids?” asked Jennifer.

“Ha,” said Gwen. “My daughter has decided she has had enough of kindergarten. She announced it was for babies and she wanted to go to grade 3 now.”

Jennifer laughed. “I don’t know about you, but in the school I attended, the grade 3 kids seemed so grown up and they went to a classroom upstairs. We kindergarteners were not allowed to climb the stairs.”

Gwen nodded. “The only thing I remember about kindergarten was the red-headed boy who gave me dandelions. We held hands during recess. His name was Dennis.”

Finishing their lattes, the two of them went to the salon. Gwen was greeted by a handsome Italian man who behaved like a perfect gentleman. Jennifer sat in the waiting room and watched.
